The Central Alabama Writers Group will welcome authors R.A. Riekki and Peter Campion to a book reading and discussion at Books-a-Million Eastchase. The meeting, which will be Tuesday December 2, 2008 at 7 p.m., will introduce R.A. Riekke's debut novel U.P. and give both authors an opportunity to discuss their work and the craft of writing with aspiring local writers. Both authors teach at Auburn University. The public is invited, and there is no admission charge.

National Book Award winner John Casey nominated R.A. Riekki's debut novel U.P. for the Sewanee Writers' Series. The book is officially released on Ghost Road Press (www.ghostroadpress.com) on October 31, 2008. Riekki has a four book deal with Ghost Road featuring the coming-of-age novel U.P. in 2008, the horror novella A Portrait of the Artist as a Boogey Man in 2010, the military memoir I Hate It Here in 2011, and the pulp crime underbelly novel Hunger and the Ass in 2012.

On October 8, 2008, Riekki appeared on ABC's Pushing Daisies, for which Riekki earned membership in the prestigious Screen Actors' Guild; he also worked as a union actor on ABC Family's The Middleman. He has three graduate level degrees in Creative Writing--from Brandeis University, the University of Virginia, and Western Michigan University.

Emmy Award winner Matt Schutt adapted several Riekki fiction pieces into the short film "Ease." Riekki has also worked on two VH1 television shows--egotrip's "The (White) Rapper Show" and the "I Love New York 2: Detroit Casting Special."

Peter Campion, Assistant Professor at Auburn University is the author of two collections of poems, Other People (University of Chicago Press,

2005) and The Lions (University of Chicago Press, 2009,) as well as a monograph on the painter Mitchell Johnson (Terrence Rogers Fine Art, 2004.).

He has held a George Starbuck Lectureship at Boston University as well as a Wallace Stegner Fellowship and Jones Lectureship at Stanford University. His poems and prose have appeared in ArtNews, The Boston Globe, Modern Painters, The New Republic, Poetry, Raritan, Slate, The Yale Review, and elsewhere. He recently won a Pushcart Prize.

He is Editor-in-Chief of Literary Imagination: the Review of the Association of Literary Scholars and Critics, which is published by Oxford University Press.

Both author's books are available at www.booksamillion.com.

The Central Alabama Writers Group is made up of local writers who are interested in fiction, creative writing, and journalism. They meet periodically in the Montgomery area, and stay in touch with an internet mailing list which features writing critique, discussion, and exercises.

October 20- 6 p.m., Cafe Louisa Montgomery, in the front of the cafe.

We will hopefully have a place nailed down by then for our December 2 meeting, and have fliers for that. This meeting will be just a few days before the kickoff of Nanowrimo (see previous article).

We'll have something suitable and unmistakable on display so you won't have to hit up random strangers. Anyone with an interest in writing is invited, but we recommend that you join our Google group to be sure that the meeting is going to happen according to schedule.

While this group requires moderator approval to join, we will add anyone who appears to have a legitimate interest in the group. Please join to stay informed about our progress!
